Local & State Government

Getting a proclamation for your state or for your city is a really good way to bring attention to brachial plexus injuries.  It can be done in a ceremonial way - have the family member who is injured present - have a candle lighting ceremony - involve the press.  We are working hard to achieve a National Proclamation in 2005.

We've made the concept of getting information out to the press really easy.  It doesn't take much effort but you can achieve great results!  We'd love for you to try at least one of these options.

Religious Community - Places of Worship

Bringing brachial plexus injury awareness to your religious community can be very inspiring for many people - including the family member who is injured.

This is a good way to share about your feelings, your reality. You may reach many families in their childbearing years and offer them information about risk factors as well.

We hope that this is something you will choose to get involved in this year. Make arrangements with your place of worship first. Donate a flower arrangement for services that week in recognition of Awareness Week. Donate and light a candle in recognition of Awareness Week. Share with the congregation during a sharing time (joys & sorrows) or give a "sermon". Submit and article or notice in religious newsletters or papers. Hand out literature during a tea and coffee gathering after services.

At Work

Sharing Awareness at work can be a great way for adults who have suffered brachial plexus injuries by trauma, to show co-workers how you have adapted to your work life and home life. Take brochures and informational sheets and leave them in offices, lunchroom or break rooms, near time clocks or hand them out personally.

Malls / Stores

We've had pretty good feedback from last year's "tables" at malls and stores.  Here are some of the ideas that were shared with us when it was all over.

Most important:  you MUST get permission from the management to set up your table.  If you spend time with them explaining the cause, you might even get them to donate something for your table.

Set up a table or booth - decorate it with a silver tablecloth - add silver balloons - add photos/posters/signs. Hand out silver ribbons.  Sell Awareness Candles.  Hand out bookmarks and business cards. Food with strong scents bring crowds! Isn't that something?  Have something pleasing to give out - something for the kids, too.  Have a game to play, wheel to spin to win a prize, or a raffle fish bowl. Bring plenty of handouts!  Invite members of your local support group to join in and if not, have your family and friends join you.  Crowds bring crowds!  (Everyone is curious.)

These stores are a good place to find pregnant women and "new parents"!  Pick one piece of information that you think would do best in that particular store.

Local Pizza Places & Hang Out Places

Papa John’s and Peter Piper Pizza have both been recognized as support organization friendly. Ask to leave business cards, bookmarker or brochures on the counter. If there is a bulletin board, ask to pin up a brochure or business card.

Halloween

Children can dress up in costumes and go door to door, and instead of receiving candy, they can hand out a piece of candy with a card attached with brachial plexus injury information on it.  Parents can hand out information cards along with candy when trick or treaters come to the door... preferably giving the candy to the child and the information card to the adult.
