Course Description
The course is a comprehensive overview of brachial plexus injury management based on over 3,500 patients and eight years of experience. Dr. Nath will present the latest information on diagnosis and evaluation for surgical intervention, including entry and exclusion criteria. There are a range of surgeries available to help manage the issues of nerve injury, boney biomechanical distortion and muscle imbalances. Dr. Pape will review the non-surgical options available that include innovative bracing options, splints, taping, Threshold Electrical Stimulation (TES), Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), and the new Electromyogram (EMG) activated muscle stimulation. Participants will take part in a problem-solving lab with videotaped examples of brachial plexus injury.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this conference, the participants will be able to:
• Describe the pathophysiology of nerve injury as applied to the brachial plexus
• Understand common patterns of nerve injury
• Understand the common clinical patterns of brachial plexus injury
• Integrate basic science and clinical aspects of brachial plexus injury into a comprehensive program of management
• Understand the sequential use of treatments and technologies (TES, NMES, EMG-NMES and EMG Biofeedback) to maximize recovery from brachial plexus injury

Continuing Education Credits for Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists
Easter Seals DuPage will offer continuing education credits (cecs) for physical therapists and occupational therapists through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. Day One is 6 contact hours. Day One & Two is 12 contact hours.
About The Instructors
Dr. Rahul Nath is the Director of the Texas Nerve and Paralysis Institute in Houston, Texas. Dr. Nath has experience with both adult and pediatric brachial plexus injuries and has done over 4,000 brachial plexus surgeries. He has developed and invented several new operations and therapy protocols for treatment of these injuries. Dr. Nath specializes in Brachial Plexus Injury (Erb’s Palsy), Winging Scapula Injury (Long Thoracic Nerve Palsy), Neurofibroma and Schwannomatosis Nerve Tumors and Nerve Surgery.
Dr. Nath received his medical degree from Northwestern University. He has received numerous medical awards and has been recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors for a fourth consecutive year. Dr. Nath has presented and written on numerous topics including peripheral nerve injury and regeneration, obstetric brachial plexus injuries, Erb’s Palsy, treatment of chronic pain, spinal cord electrostimulation for chronic pain and fetal wound repair.

Dr. Karen Pape is the Medical Director of the TASC (Technology Attitudes Systems Coaching) Network. The Network is comprised of health professionals, individuals with neurological problems, and family members who have chosen to explore and integrate new treatments and technologies into their rehabilitation programs. The TASC Network has trained over 1,200 therapists and physicians worldwide.
Dr. Pape studied experimental psychology and neurophysiology from McGill University, received her medical degree from the University of Toronto and has postgraduate training in pediatrics with a specialty in neonatology. She was a Neonatologist and Director of Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic at The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto. Dr. Pape’s research focused on diagnosing and managing neonatal brain injury and the correlation between neonatal brain damage and later child development. Dr. Pape is extensively published and lectures around the world on the subject of treating neurologically disabled children.
