driving adaptations

Post by skcrawford » Sat Jan 18, 2014 5:06 pm

My 16 year old son has a left Brachial Plexus injury from birth. He has started to learn to drive and says he can't keep his left arm on the steering wheel. He is resting it on his left leg and using his left hand for blinkers, and other controls on that side of the steering column. Using only one hand does seem to affect his ability to accurately manipulate the wheel. I've done some searching online and only see adaptive devices for countries other than the US. How have other US teenagers dealt with this? How kind is the DMV re: this kind of injury when taking a driver's test or driver's ed? Thanks in advance.

I am not 16 years old but driving with one arm is possible. There are adaptive devices available here in America. Things like "wheel spinners" can be bought on line. wHen I bought my first car the car dealer made the arrangement for adaptive devices to be put on my steering wheel.
