When was your Brachial Plexus Injury Clinic established?

I have been practicing in Atlanta since January of 2000.
Identify what specialties related to brachial plexus injuries are represented by practitioners working in your clinic including physical/occupational therapists, if any.

I am a hand/upper extremity surgeon. I work with a neurosurgeon and neurologist with whom we treat children with birth related brachial plexus palsy. We are all in separate practices. I also have an interest and expertise in upper extremity paralysis in adults, including traumatic brachial plexus injury.
What do you/your clinic specialize in treating?

  • adult brachial plexus injuries
  • obstetrical brachial plexus injuries
  • trauma or other brachial plexus injuries

Indicate the total number of brachial plexus patients you/your clinic has evaluated since your establishment:

Number of children (Obstetrical brachial plexus injuries):

10-20

Number of children (Trauma or other brachial plexus injuries):
2-5

Number of adults (Obstetrical brachial plexus injuries):
0

Number of adults (Trauma or other brachial plexus injuries):
1-5
State your philosophy regarding evaluation, referral and treatment of obstetrical brachial plexus injuries in children.

We treat all children with birth related plexus palsy similarly. Once the diagnosis is established, treatment depends upon the nature and extent of their paralysis, and extent of recovery based upon monthly follow-up. Options for treatment include observation, early microsurgical repair of the plexus, and later shoulder/elbow hand/wrist reconstruction through tendon transfers as needed. Therapy/rehab is always integrated into all the treatment options. This treatment is coordinated through myself, a hand/upper extremity surgeon, as well as pediatric neurologists, neurosurgeons and therapists.
State your philosophy regarding evaluation, referral and treatment of trauma or other brachial plexus injuries in children.

Different problem, but similar philosophy as above. That is, we offer the full range of treatment options, from observation to therapy to surgery and rehab.
State your philosophy regarding evaluation, referral and treatment of obstetrical brachial plexus injuries in adults.

I have not seen adults with this, but treatment is as with any other adult with upper extremity paralysis. Treatment options depend upon the etiology of the paralysis and the balance of function present weighed against impairments. Again, all treatment options are offered depending on the particular patient..
State your philosophy regarding evaluation, referral and treatment of trauma or other brachial plexus injuries in adults.

As above.
State your philosophy regarding pain management and brachial plexus injuries.

Patients who present with brachial plexus related neuritis, dysesthesias or hyperesthesias are referred to a pain service in tandem with therapy for management of this difficult problem.
Indicate research efforts (include dates please) conducted by you specific to brachial plexus injuries.

I am currently enrolling in a nation-wide multi center study concerning the treatment of birth related brachial plexus palsy.
Indicate any other facts that you feel would help families and individuals understand your practice.

My practice’s website is www.handtreatment.com.
Do you accept any national/governmental payment for services or are you enrolled in any state medicaid plans? Please provide information on these plans and include which states you are enrolled in for medicaid services.

We are enrolled in national govt. payment services. Yes, enrolled in GA medicaid.
