NOTE: Only questions answered are included here

Identify what specialties related to brachial plexus injuries are represented by practitioners working in your clinic including physical/occupational therapists, if any.

I am a pediatric neurosurgeon, and I work closely with an occupational therapist and a pediatric neurologist who has a special interest in peripheral nerve conditions.
What do you/your clinic specialize in treating?

No adult practice
  • obstetrical brachial plexus injury in children
  • traumatic plexus injury in children

Indicate the total number of brachial plexus patients you/your clinic has evaluated since your establishment:

Number of children (Obstetrical brachial plexus Injuries):
15 operations (no count of evaluations)
Number of adults (Trauma or other brachial plexus Injuries):
1 operation
State you/your clinic philosophy regarding evaluation, referral and treatment of obstetrical brachial plexus injuries in children.

Newborns should be seen by me and by an occupational therapist as soon as the injury is recognized. OT should continue through the first 3 months. At 3 months a decision can be made regarding the need for plexus reconstruction based on the beginning (or not) of recovery in the elements of the upper trunk. If indicated, plexus reconstruction should be performed between 3 and 6 months of age.
State you/your clinic philosophy regarding evaluation, referral and treatment of trauma or other brachial plexus injuries in children.

Injured children should be seen by me and by an occupational therapist as soon as the injury is recognized. Electromyography performed sometime after 2 weeks provides some prognostic information. OT should continue through the first 3 months. At 3 months a decision can be made regarding the need for plexus exploration based on the beginning (or not) of recovery in individual elements of the plexus. If indicated, plexus exploration for neurolysis or reconstruction should be performed shortly after the 3 month mark.
Indicate any other facts that you feel would help families and individuals understand your practice.

St Christopher’s Hospital for Children is one of the oldest, free-standing children’s hospitals in the country. It is affiliated with Drexel University College of Medicine (formerly MCP Hahnemann University), where I have appointments as Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics, and with Drexel University. It is a training site for pediatricians and many pediatric subspecialists.
