The mission of the Children's Mercy Hospital Brachial Plexus Injury Clinic is to provide comprehensive medical, therapeutic, surgical, and rehabilitation management for children and adolescents with brachial plexus injuries of all etiologies. This is accomplished through a multidisciplinary team approach. The Clinic team consists of a pediatric rehabilitation specialist, occupational therapists, a pediatric plastic surgeon, a pediatic orthopedic surgeon, a pediatric clinical nurse practitioner, and a pediatric social worker. All members of the team are committed to providing up-to-date clinical expertise in the management of brachial plexus injuries of all etiologies. Our approach to the management of brachial plexus injuries is one that combines medical/surgical evaluation and management with parental education and support. Present services provided include therapeutic evaluations and program development, electrodiagnostic evaluations, developmental assessments, medical evaluations, and surgical evaluations and management. Our outpatient therapy program incorporates land and pool based therapies, therapeutic electircal stimulation programming, orthotic development, and home exercise education/programming into the development of an individualized, comprehensive therapy plan tailored for each individual child. All services incorporate parent education as a key component.

State your clinic philosophy regarding pain management and brachial plexus injuries.

Acute and chronic pain are recognized as potential complications of brachial plexus injuries, regardless of cause. Each child is assessed for issues pertaining to pain and an appropriate intervention program is then developed based upon the presumed cause of his/her pain complaints. This program is then modified according to the child's response to the intervention.
