Story by: Tracey in Burnsville, Mn., USA
I have 3 daughters and my youngest one is the one affected by Erbs. She weighed 10 lbs. 5 1/2 oz. when she was born. The Dr. induced 2 weeks early, thinking she wouldn't be as big. The induction went fine and labor went smooth and fast. Her head started to crown and I was given the "CUT" and continued pushing. Her head came out to the tip of her ears and then she got stuck. The Dr. tried to have the nurses help bend and push, apply pressure, etc. but nothing worked. Then she coded, being half in and half out. A emergency c-section was called when she started to code. I was taken to the operating room and told that there were complications and they were going to try and save my baby. I was cut from the belly button down, and durning the c-section a rare procedure called a cephalic replacement was being done on my daughter (she had to have her head pushed back up through the birth canal and then taken by the c-section). Once she was taken out, she had asphyxia for 29 minutes. The Dr.s did CPR, bagged her with o
xygen, IV's, etc. to try and bring her back. She finally took her first breathe after 29 minutes. Besides the brachial plexus injury to her right arm, she has other problems due to the asphyxia. She has cerebral palsy, apraxia of speech, gross and fine motor delays, seizures, low muscle hypotonia, PDD, and now more behavioral and mental overloads to the brain damage at birth. I remember when the right arm "problem" was the problem I had to work on. THAT WAS HARD!! And now with the other problems as well, it is very hard to handle sometimes. I do estim to her right arm, but now her scapula is winging badly. Have been taping, but can't tell a difference. If anyone has had a tramatic birth involving a cephalic replacement, please email me at aries_in_mn@hotmail.com I would love to talk with you. Thanks....
