Story by: Dennis Kennedy in Albany/Oregon/USA

My injury happened on Dec. 26, 2000. I was riding home from work at about 55mph.
It was very dark and a black angus cow was wandering down the road. She completely
blended in with the blacktop, until I was 20'-30'away. I had no time to stop, swerve, or
even slow down. The next thing I knew, I was on the ground and couldn't get up. I spent
8 days in the hospital because of a ruptured spleen and also learned of my bpi. I hadn't
ever heard of this kind of injury before. Apparently, I have no avulsions (neurologist
did an MRI the day after the accident), but the injury seems to be fairly serious as so
far I can't really tell if I've recovered any function and it's been 3 months since the
accident. All of my left shoulder muscles, and my biceps are nonfunctional. My triceps and
everything below the elbow seem to work pretty well. I do have some numbness in my
thumb and hand. I am right handed but learing to do everything one handed has been c
challenging. Doctors are telling me to wait 1-2 years to recover. I did finally convince them
to let me consult with a neurosurgeon and see if he could help.
I would love to hear from more adults with BPIs. Good luck to all.
