Nancy Birk
(nancy@ubpn.org)President Kent, OH Nancy Birk is an emerita professor of libraries and media services at Kent State University where she held the position of Curator of Special Collections and University Archivist. She retired from Kent State in December of 2002. Her interests and research span broad subject areas and she has published in the areas of rare book librarianship, preservation of library materials and libraries in Greece. She coordinated Kent's exchange program with Greece and has worked in Greece both for the university and with the Fulbright Foundation. Nancy has a LOBPI and is very excited to be an advocate for those with brachial plexus injuries through the United Brachial Plexus Network.
Cathy Kanter
(cathy@ubpn.org)Immediate Past President La Jolla, CA Cathy Kanter has served as Interim President and President of UBPN and remains in her current position as Immediate Past President. Cathy is cofounder of the San Diego Brachial Plexus Network, which began in 1994 as the nation's first support group for those affected by this injury. Her introduction to brachial plexus injuries came with the birth of her first child in 1993. She has years of volunteer experience with many school and civic organizations in and around San Diego County. Cathy has an MA in Dispute Resolution and became a Fellow at Pepperdine University School of Law, Institute for Dispute Resolution. Her professional experiences include mediator, arbitrator, marketer, policy maker, human resource management, and corporate training and development in the customer service area.
Richard Looby
(richard@ubpn.org)Vice President Reading, MA Richard Looby lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Lisa, and three small daughters, Kailyn, Julia and Sarah. Kailyn suffered a brachial plexus injury at birth in 1997. Richard has a B.S. degree in chemistry, and currently works for Ascent Therapeutics. He has a strong interest in the rights to services provided by IDEA, and has contributed resource information to the UBPN Awareness effort on the rights of families to services within the school system.
Courtney Edlinger
(courtney@ubpn.org)Secretary Hamtramck, MI Courtney Edlinger lives in Hamtramck, Michigan with her fiance, Jeff. She is currently a part time graduate student at Central Michigan University, finishing up her MSA degree in Human Resources. She came to UBPN in 2002 after an automobile accident in 2001 leaving her a RTBPI. Courtney has always enjoyed helping others but never imagined the roads this injury would take her down, helping others. August 17, 2004 she returned from the UK where she went to a support group meeting there and met some great people. Courtney enjoys serving on the board of directors and helping UBPN to grow.
Sabrina Randolph (sabrina@ubpn.org)Treasurer San Diego, CA Sabrina M. Randolph is a CPA and graduated from San Diego State University, Summa Cum Laude, with Honors in Accounting in 1999. She is currently a senior manager of consulting services at VACO, LLC. Prior to this, Sabrina was a manager at PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. and she also worked as a public accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP for five years. Although Sabrina is not directly impacted by a brachial plexus injury, she has found that UBPN is the ideal organization for contributing her time and expertise. She enjoys working with an organization that is continuously breaking new ground and improving the quality of life for so many people..
Julia Aten
(julia@ubpn.org)Board Member Silverdale, WA Julia Aten is a U.S. Army spouse and became a member of the BPI community when their son Joshua was born in December of 1989 with a shoulder dystocia birth resulting in a total plexus injury to the right arm. She has been married to Scott for 15 years and they are currently stationed in the state of Washington. She volunteered as a key wife and as support staff for Navy/Marine Corps relief society when they were in the Marine Corps and she also has run two family readiness groups now in the Army. She is an Army Family Team Building instructor for the Army and her goal is to become a Master Instructor for AFTB for the Army. Julia is a certified medical assistant and she has done medical transcription for many years. She is currently a stay at home mom and feels her energies are better served in her volunteer work for the military and for those afflicted with BPI's. She is the co-founder of Helping Hands with Peggy Ferguson for the greater Northwest region. She is also the chairperson for UBPN's Wings program and that is where she plans to spend a lot of time to try and get more help for families that have to travel for medical care. Julia also serves as the military liason for the BPI community.
Kathleen M. Mallozzi
(kathm@ubpn.org)Board Member Pearl River, NY Kathleen M. Mallozzi has been involved in volunteer activities for most of her life. She has held many leadership roles, including being a lifetime member of PTA, where she has served as President and as Neighborhood Organizer for Girl Scouts. She has served on the Executive Boards of both Public and Parochial schools and taught a religious education class for 16 years on a weekly basis. Kathleen is an active member of the Pearl River Woman's Club and has held numerous positions including their executive board. While raising her children and volunteering, she also held jobs where she worked on Payroll, Accounting and other Special projects. She is now retired from work and can pursue her many arts and craft. She and her husband, Ralph, have been married for 43 years and have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Kathleen is right OBPI and enjoys serving on the UBPN Board of Directors.
Karen McClune
(karen@ubpn.org)Board Member Auburn, WA Karen McClune and her husband, David, have two sons: Aaron, who lives in Anchorage, Alaska, and Ryan, who lives in Philadelphia, PA. Ryan was injured on February 29th, 2000 after a motorcycle accident avulsed a good percentage of his left brachial plexus. It is through Ryan that Karen comes to UBPN. She graduated with a B.A. in Child Development from California State University Northridge. She is a substitute teacher in Special Education and English as a Second Language for the Kent School District in Kent, Washington and has been an active leader in Cub Scouts and PTA. Karen was co-chair of the Health and Safety committee for the Washington State PTA and is on the Board of Directors of Communities in School of Kent, WA. She is also on the Board of Directors of the friends group at her library. Karen is very grateful to UBPN, which has helped Ryan with the progress that he has made and for their support. She is excited to be on the UBPN Board and to help advance UBPN to the next level of helping others.
Lisa Muscarella
(lisa@ubpn.org)Board Member Flagstaff, AZ Lisa has a B.S. degree in Human Development & Psychology, with a minor in Family Studies and a M.A. in Counseling. Lisa has always devoted her life’s work to helping children, adolescents and families. Since the birth of her son, those interests have become increasingly focused on helping families impacted by brachial plexus injuries. She is actively involved in providing support to families through In-Reach (Arizona’s Brachial Plexus Injury Network). Lisa’s true passion is prevention. The travesty of preventable obstetrical injuries has touched her deeply and has only served to further strengthen her resolve. She is grateful to UBPN, for all that they offer families impacted by this injury, and is honored to now be a part of the UBPN team. Lisa has a strong faith, that together, we can make an impact in preventing this devastating injury.
John Petit
(johnp@ubpn.org)Board Member Renton, WA John was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. He attended the University of Washington where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He retired in 1999 from The Boeing Company after a rewarding 34 year career conducting and leading research and development programs for advanced military aircraft. Although John’s right OBPI injury results in certain limitations, he has always considered it as an inconvenience rather than a problem. With the support of his parents and family and extensive physical therapy and surgery, he obtained the maximum possible recovery in his early teens. The dedication, support, and sacrifices of his parents and family were key to the recovery he has. John and his wife, Marlene, live in Renton, Washington. He enjoys an active life style which includes hiking, canoeing, swimming, fly fishing, and downhill snow skiing. He especially enjoys building wooden toys for his grandchildren. John considers his association with UBPN as an opportunity to promote awareness and prevention of obstetric birth injuries and to help OBPI children and young adults deal with their injury.
Claudia Strobing
(claudia@ubpn.org)Board Member Roslyn Heights, NY Claudia Strobing has had a varied career. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science she worked in Congress, on political campaigns and in the not-for-profit sector. She also has a certificate in Food Science and worked in restaurants and hotels as a Pastry Chef. Married since 1991 to Frank, she has four children: Nicolette, Isabel, Andrew and Juliana. Juliana was injured at birth 5 years ago. Claudia has always been active in volunteer activities. At the Jewish Community Center where her children went to pre-school, she co-founded the Parent Association. Claudia runs the NY Picnics and joined forces with UBPN last year to help with Support Group organization and continues in that capacity. Claudia looks forward to her tenure on the Board of Directors.
Amy Theis
(amy@ubpn.org)Board Member Bemidji, MN Joining the UBPN 2006-07 Board of Directors for the first time is Amy Theis. Amy lives in Bemidji, MN three months out of the year and in Duluth, MN the remaining nine where she is a full time college student at the College of St. Scholastica. She is working on a Masters Degree in occupational therapy and a minor in psychology. Amy found UBPN in the fall of 2001 while working on a research paper for her ninth grade health class. She has always been interested in her injury and loves to learn more about it while helping other people to learn about their injuries as well. She has always enjoyed volunteering and especially likes working with young children. Amy has a ROBPI and is very excited to serve her term on the UBPN Board of Directors!
Judy Thornberry
(judy@ubpn.org)Board Member Palm Bay, FL Judy Thornberry lives in Florida with her husband David and daughter Sadye. Judy is 43 and ROBPI. She belongs to the Space Coast Brachial Plexus Injury Support Group. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. and is a stay at home Mom and substitute teacher. She teaches religious school at her temple. She has a strong desire to help prevent this injury by making the public more aware of the cause. Judy is looking forward to working with United Brachial Plexus Network. | ||
