Research
UBPN feels it is important to support research regarding brachial plexus injuries whenever we can. The following are some projects that UBPN has directly supported. We hope these will be the first of many.
For adults with TBPI: the PLANeT study
The PLANeT Study is led by Washington University Orthopedics (PI: Christopher J. Dy, MD MPH) and funded by a R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease grant R01 AR079139-01). Pilot research for the PLANeT Study was funded by the American Foundation for the Surgery of the Hand.

For adults with BPBI
The identification of the gap in medical knowledge regarding adults with BPBI has prompted a research project (known as the Lived Experience of Adults with Brachial Plexus Birth Injuries, or LEAP study) which focuses on the long-term outcomes of adults with brachial plexus birth injuries. This research lays the groundwork for future studies and will hopefully be a catalyst for interest in the adult population which so often falls through the cracks. The LEAP study investigators have published two papers from the project so far, which you can read for free using the links below.

Your Rights as an Adult with BPBI
Adults with brachial plexus injuries in the United States automatically have certain rights. In addition, there are government funded benefits that some adults with BPBI may qualify for. You can find more information on rights and benefits by using these links:
Asking Others for Help
There will be times when you need help from others around you. While asking for help is never easy, knowing how to ask can make it easier. Some situations where you may need help include at the airport, in a restaurant, or in case of an emergency. You can download our BPI “Assistance Needed” Cards to show employees to help explain your needs.
